THE BERKELEY MARINA AND FOURTH STREET DISTRICT - BREATHTAKING SIGHTS AND UNIQUE DELIGHTS

by Jane King and Deborah Roscoe
Mt. Tamalpais viewed from Berkeley
Delicious dining, unparalleled shopping, awesome kite flying, sailing, hiking--these are all possibilities for entertainment near our hotel on the Berkeley Marina.  The Marina itself boasts three restaurants in addition to the hotel's Bay Grille and Lounge. http://www.doubletreeberkeleymarina.com/dining/

Also,  the nearby Fourth Street District (just across the street--though the "street" in question is I-80) is a treasure trove of interesting restaurants, specialty shops, many featuring one-of-a-kind goods, and local art.  While the venues in the Marina are all pretty much walking distance, to get to the Fourth Street and outlying areas, the brave may want to try the over-the-freeway pedestrian bridge and the not-so-brave (comme moi) ask for a ride on the hotel's free shuttle.  Others of you may choose to take the shuttle to Berkeley's "Gourmet Ghetto" for dining at the likes of  world-famed Chez Panisse (hint: it is easier to reserve and costs less to eat in the upstairs Cafe http://www.chezpanisse.com/reservations/restaurant/).  We hope to highlight a few of our favorite places (and don't forget Sheila Lau's recommendations in the Dec 1 blog post--see the archive menu at the bottom of the page.).

PART I: RESTAURANTS AT THE MARINA:

SKATES ON THE BAY

OK, I admit I LOVE Skates, a Marina-side restaurant with a 180-degree view of the San Francisco Bay.  If you're lucky, you can sit by a window right over the water and watch the seabirds swooping by, though every seat is pretty much a seat with a view. The bar is mellow, with fireplace when it's cold, and the restaurant features fresh seafood and other good stuff.  Reservations recommended.  Here's their website: http://skatesonthebay.com/  And here's Aurelia Long and I exiting Skates, replete from a satisfying lunch with Cindy Bevc (photographer) following the Region 3 meeting last fall (Hey! we were doing necessary, important research for this blog, OK?):

ALSO ON THE MARINA: HS LORDSHIP'S and HANA JAPAN STEAK AND SEAFOOD:

We haven't personally visited these, but they certainly look inviting, and you can read about them here: http://www.hslordships.com/home;

PART II:  DINING IN THE FOURTH STREET DISTRICT
OLDIES BUT GOODIES:

Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto:

Spenger's, though now run by McCormick and Schick's, is a venerable Bay Area institution, an old-fashioned wharf-type seafood place that has kept its charm.  Famous for the clam chowder and, of course, Dungeness crab, Spenger's features a large, varied menu of seafood and steaks: http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/Locations/berkeley-california/FourthSt/menus.aspx
For those of us from the Bay Area, it's a walk down memory lane, and for everyone it promises a comfortable and inviting experience.

Another oldie but goodie is Brennan's, an old-fashioned bar and hofbrau (remember those?), where, I'm told,  many a Berkeley undergrad first tasted  Irish coffee.  Brennan's is a good-time kind of place--big, friendly, noisy, fun.  If you are a meat and potatoes type, or have brought your kids along, this place should make you very happy!   http://www.brennansberkeley.com/

Finally, in this category we have Bette's Oceanview Diner and Bette's-to-Go,  famous breakfast and lunch spots on 4th St. (and pretty much always crowded, so the "to-go" option is a good idea)--there are benches along 4th and we have frequently seen people munching a slice of Bette's pizza while people-watching. Someplace to think about dining before or after the conference, especially if the weather is nice. http://www.bettesdiner.com/Menus.aspx

Also enjoy new links to some fun things to do and see in Berkeley (left of the page).

Next Week's blog: More 4th St. District restaurants and some shops we love.
